Troy and Pike County Crane Exam Study, On Your Schedule
In Troy, the biggest building program of the last decade has not been downtown. It has been out in northern Pike County, where Lockheed Martin’s missile and munitions plant sits on about 3,800 acres and keeps adding production space. That campus, plus Troy University and the commercial strip along US-231, gives local operators, riggers and signal persons a steady stream of work that ranges from structural steel to delicate equipment sets. Our online course gets you ready for the written part of an accredited certification without a classroom schedule, so you can study between shifts, on rain days or after the kids are asleep.
Defense production keeps expanding north of town
Lockheed Martin’s Pike County facility employs more than 800 people and builds or supports hardware for THAAD, Javelin, HELLFIRE, JASSM and LRASM. In 2019 the company broke ground on a 225,000-square-foot building tied to JASSM production. A later groundbreaking started an 87,000-square-foot Munitions Production Center, called Building 47, for THAAD interceptors, and in March 2026 the company and the state announced an agreement for more than $150 million in new investment over five years.
Each of those buildings means steel erection, precast and roof work, followed by tooling, presses and process equipment going inside. Sites like this run strict access and safety programs, and contractors are typically asked to document operator certification, rigger qualification and signal person qualification before anyone touches a load.
Picking a course for Troy-area jobs
Steel erectors and general contractors on plant buildings usually start with Mobile Crane Operator. Crews who set machinery and tooling inside finished buildings get the most from Rigger Level I and then Rigger Level II. On secure sites with long sight lines and blind landings, a qualified Signal Person is often the busiest person on the ground.
University and commercial projects in town add smaller hydraulic cranes and boom trucks setting HVAC units, glass and trusses. If your daily machine is a service-body crane, look at the service truck crane course instead.
Heat, red clay and spring storms
Southeast Alabama summers combine high heat with heavy humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms can push lightning and gusts across open sites with little warning. Early starts, a weather plan agreed on before rigging and a clear stop rule make the day safer. Spring adds severe weather and tornado watches that can shut down lifting for an afternoon.
Much of the ground around Troy is clay that turns slick and soft after rain. On new plant pads, check compaction records and use mats under outriggers rather than trusting a surface that looks dry.
Federal rules, applied in Pike County
Alabama has no state crane operator license, and federal OSHA covers private employers here. Construction crane work falls under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC. In plain terms: your operator card must come from an accredited testing organization (1926.1427), your employer must also evaluate you on the equipment, signal persons must be qualified (1926.1428), and riggers in the fall zone must be qualified (1926.1425). The Alabama requirements guide explains these in more depth.
The written exam can be taken through Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a test event. The practical exam is a hands-on test on the crane itself.
Questions people ask
Do I need a security clearance to do crane work at a defense plant?
Access rules are set by the facility and its contractors, not by the certification. Ask the hiring contractor what badging and background checks the site requires.
Is a signal person card useful by itself?
Yes. Many ground crew members earn signal person qualification first because it is required whenever the operator cannot see the load or the landing area, and it builds toward rigging and operating.
I am a Troy University student. Can I study around classes?
The course is self-paced and works on a phone or laptop, so it can fit around a class schedule.
How do I ask about enrolling a crew?
Send the enrollment form. An advisor replies with crew enrollment details.
