Crane Certification Prep Built Around Montgomery’s Job Sites
Scan the skyline from the Alabama River bluffs and you will count booms: a new legislative building near the Capitol, a rail terminal taking shape for the Port of Mobile, and an auto industry on the east side that keeps adding floor space. Montgomery runs on government, Hyundai and its suppliers, and the freight moving along I-65 and I-85, and each keeps operators, riggers and signal persons busy. This page covers the lifting work specific to the capital, the rules that apply here, and how our self-paced course fits a River Region work week.
Three projects that define lifting work in the capital right now
The new State House. In September 2023 the Legislative Council voted to replace the aging legislative building, citing mold and other long-running problems. The Retirement Systems of Alabama is handling design and construction, and a July 2026 update said the work was on schedule to seat lawmakers for the 2027 organizational session. After the move, the old building is slated for demolition and replacement with green space, so downtown crews can expect both erection and tear-down picks in tight blocks with heavy pedestrian traffic.
The Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility. The Alabama Port Authority broke ground in February 2025 on a roughly $100 million, 272-acre terminal served by CSX, designed as an inland extension of the Port of Mobile’s container business. Reported work includes a new rail siding and a bridge over the CSX main line, with opening targeted for early 2027. Bridge girder sets over an active railroad are a textbook case for written lift plans, rail-side clearance rules and a dedicated signal person.
Hyundai and its supplier base. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama launched production in May 2005. A $410 million project announced in 2019 added an assembly line for the Santa Cruz pickup and about 230,000 square feet in the stamping, welding and parts processing areas. Mobis, Hyundai’s largest tier-one supplier, has operated in Montgomery since 2002 and broke ground in 2024 on a 460,000-square-foot aftermarket parts expansion. Press lines, die changes, robot cells and rooftop mechanical units all come with these buildings.
Which credentials Montgomery employers tend to ask for
Alabama issues no state crane license, and the City of Montgomery does not license operators either. Private-sector job sites fall under federal OSHA, which keeps area offices in Birmingham and Mobile. On construction work, 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires certification through an accredited testing organization plus an evaluation by the employer, and 1926.1428 sets the qualified signal person standard. Cranes inside factories are covered by the general industry rules at 1910.179 and 1910.180. Our Alabama requirements guide goes through each rule in more depth.
A point that matters in a capital city: Alabama has no OSHA-approved plan for public employees, so federal OSHA does not reach city, county or state crews here. Contractors working on public projects are still private employers, though, and the certification rules follow them onto those sites.
- Mobile crane operator: the base card for hydraulic truck cranes and crawlers on downtown towers, plant additions and the rail terminal.
- Tower crane operator: worth considering if you want to run the fixed cranes that show up on multi-story government and mixed-use buildings.
- Rigger Level II: for crews who plan the lift, calculate sling loads and set equipment inside crowded auto plants.
- Signal person: needed any time the operator loses sight of the load or landing area, which is routine on rail bridge work and inside tall structures.
Weather and ground conditions along the Alabama River
Spring brings fast-moving squall lines and tornado watches across central Alabama, and summer afternoons build thunderstorms with lightning and gust fronts that arrive ahead of the rain. Check the forecast before rigging and land the load early instead of racing a storm. Heat and humidity wear on ground crews long before they slow a machine, so plan water, shade and rotation for anyone signaling from open pavement.
Low ground near the river and creek bottoms can stay soft for days after heavy rain, and much of the area sits on clay that loses bearing strength when saturated. Outrigger mats, a look at the soil report and a conversation with the site superintendent about recent fill are part of every setup here, not extras.
Fitting study around shift work in the River Region
A lot of Montgomery-area operators work rotating plant shifts or long days on commercial jobs, so the course is self-paced and open around the clock. Lessons and practice questions run on any device, and progress saves automatically. Companies preparing several people at once can set up crew enrollment through the enrollment form, and an enrollment advisor replies there.
When you finish, you schedule the written exam with the certifying body, either through Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a test event. The practical exam is always taken hands-on on the crane type you are certifying for. Birmingham is about 90 miles up I-65 if you need a larger metro for testing options.
Questions people ask
Do I need a City of Montgomery permit to run a crane?
Alabama has no city or state operator license. You need a certification from an accredited body plus your employer’s evaluation under federal rules. Right-of-way permits for a crane setup are a separate matter for the project team.
I work maintenance inside an auto plant. Does Subpart CC apply to me?
Overhead and gantry cranes used in plant operations fall under the general industry standards at 29 CFR 1910.179 and 1910.180. If you set a mobile crane for construction or a major equipment install, the construction rules apply. Many plant contractors carry certification for both situations.
Will this course get me ready for the hands-on test?
It prepares you for the written exams. The practical exam is a separate hands-on test on a real crane, scheduled through the certifying body.
Is there anywhere in Montgomery I can visit to sign up?
No. Everything happens online, and the enrollment form is the way to reach us.
