Crane Exam Preparation for Greenville and Butler County

Greenville, the Camellia City and seat of Butler County, sits on Interstate 65 roughly 40 to 45 miles south of Montgomery. That stretch of interstate is why its biggest employer is here: Hwashin America, a tier-one supplier that stamps and welds body components for Hyundai's Montgomery assembly plant, opened in Greenville in 2003 and has grown into the county's largest industrial employer. Press lines, welding cells and die changes all depend on people qualified to lift. If you work in or around Butler County, our self-paced course prepares you for the written part of an accredited crane certification.

A stamping campus that keeps growing

Hwashin started in Greenville with a 150,000-square-foot building and about 200 workers. Repeated expansions followed: a $25 million, 100,000-square-foot addition in 2013 for new production and welding lines, $26 million of new equipment in 2018, and a 2022 project in the Greenville Industrial Park that renovated a 196,000-square-foot former Joysun/Key Safety building for electric vehicle components. The main plant now covers roughly 650,000 square feet, and in November 2025 the company announced a further facility of more than $60 million, set to open in October 2027.

Each of those steps brought in cranes. Building shells mean steel erection and roof equipment. Installing presses and welding lines means heavy, dense loads with lifting points that aren't always obvious, often set during a weekend or a short shutdown. Riggers on these jobs are expected to confirm weights from drawings, figure sling angles and pick hardware rated for the load, while plant crews run the overhead cranes inside.

Recommended training for Butler County

See the full list on our courses page, or go straight to Rigger Level I, Mobile Crane Operator and Articulating Crane Operator.

  • Rigger Level I if you hook and guide loads during press installs and line moves.
  • Mobile Crane Operator if you run the hydraulic crane brought in for plant additions or commercial building at the I-65 exits.
  • Articulating Crane Operator for drivers delivering steel, block and building supplies around Butler County.
  • Signal Person for anyone talking a crane through a roof opening where the operator can't see the landing.

Plant cranes versus construction cranes

This distinction trips up a lot of people in factory towns. The bridge and gantry cranes that run every shift inside a plant are covered by OSHA’s general industry standards at 29 CFR 1910.179 and 1910.180. When a contractor brings a mobile crane onto the property to erect a building addition or install a line, the construction rules in 1926 Subpart CC take over, and those require operator certification from an accredited body plus an employer evaluation (1926.1427).

Alabama does not license crane operators at the state level, and Greenville has no city license. Federal OSHA handles enforcement for private employers. Our Alabama certification requirements page lays out the signal person and rigger rules too.

How prep works from a small town

You do not need to drive anywhere to study. Lessons and practice questions run on your phone, tablet or laptop, and the course stays open around the clock. When you are ready, you register with the certifying body for the written exam, which can be taken through Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a scheduled test event. The practical exam is separate and always hands-on.

Plants and contractors sending several workers can arrange crew enrollment through the enrollment form.

Questions people ask

I run the overhead crane at my plant. Do I need NCCCO certification?

Federal rules for plant overhead cranes require trained, designated operators rather than accredited certification. Some employers still ask for an accredited card or offer it as a step toward mobile crane work. Check with your safety department.

How far is in-person testing from Greenville?

Montgomery is roughly 40 to 45 miles up I-65, and Mobile is about 80 miles south. The written exam is also offered through Online Proctored Testing, so only the practical requires travel.

Do I get a certificate from you that lets me operate?

No. Your certification comes from the accredited body after you pass its written and practical exams, and your employer still has to evaluate you. Our course is preparation for those exams.

Is the course useful for truck drivers with a knuckle boom?

Yes. The articulating crane course covers that equipment, including load charts and setup.
