Crane and Rigging Exam Prep for Crenshaw County

Crenshaw County is small, rural and closer to the Hyundai supply chain than most people expect. Luverne, the county seat, holds two automotive plants that build frames and door assemblies, plus a bakery, a bottler and a string of timber and lumber businesses spread across pine country. Equipment gets installed, moved and serviced in all of them, and that work keeps a handful of local operators, riggers and maintenance techs busy. If you are one of them and you need a nationally accredited credential, our self-paced online prep lets you study for the written exams from a phone, tablet or laptop without driving anywhere for class.

Where lifting happens in Luverne

The two largest manufacturing employers in the county both sit in Luverne and both feed automotive assembly. ITAC Alabama, the plant once known as SMART of Alabama, produces vehicle frames for Hyundai, and in late 2025 it announced a 37,000-square-foot addition expected to bring about 100 jobs. Dongwon Autopart Technology Alabama turns out door components and inner assemblies. Stamping presses, welding cells, dies and conveyors in plants like these are set, shifted and pulled for rebuilds with overhead cranes and rented mobile units.

Food plants add their own steady stream of rigging. Sister Schubert’s rolls ship nationwide from Luverne, and Pepsi Bottling Company of Luverne moved into a new 75,000-square-foot distribution center. Ovens, mixers, racking and rooftop units in buildings like these all have to go in, come out or get serviced at some point, and someone has to rig them.

Who on a Crenshaw crew needs which card

Alabama has no state crane operator license, and neither does any city in the county. The rule that counts is federal: 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires construction crane operators to hold certification from an accredited body and to be evaluated by their employer. Inside a plant, overhead and gantry cranes fall under 29 CFR 1910.179. Federal OSHA, through its Birmingham and Mobile area offices, enforces both for private employers here.

Heat, pine and soft ground

South-central Alabama summers mean long stretches of heat and humidity, with afternoon thunderstorms that can push a lift to the morning hours. Spring brings tornado watches, and Gulf systems occasionally drag heavy rain this far inland. For a crane crew that means watching wind speed against the load chart, reading wet clay before outriggers go down and planning cribbing on timber-yard ground that has been rutted by log trucks. Those same topics show up on the written exams: site evaluation, ground bearing, wind limits and load chart deductions.

Testing logistics from the county

Written NCCCO exams can be taken through Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a scheduled test event, so the knowledge portion rarely requires a long trip. The practical exam is different: it is always hands-on at a practical test site, and online prep never stands in for it. Montgomery is roughly an hour north on US 331, which puts most Crenshaw candidates within reasonable range of practical testing in the capital area.

For the full picture of federal requirements, see the Alabama certification requirements guide. Companies sending several people through at once can use crew enrollment, and an enrollment advisor answers through the form.

Questions people ask

Do overhead crane operators in a Luverne plant need NCCCO certification?

Subpart CC certification applies to construction cranes. Overhead cranes used in plant production fall under 29 CFR 1910.179, which requires trained, designated operators. Many employers still choose an accredited credential, especially for people who also run mobile cranes on expansion projects.

How long does an NCCCO card last once I earn it?

Five years. Renewal requires passing a written recertification exam, and documenting 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during that period can waive the recertification practical. Our recertification course is built for that step.

Can I study between shifts on a phone?

Yes. The prep runs on any device around the clock, and your place is saved so you can pick up after a long run of overtime.

Are county road crews covered by OSHA crane rules?

Alabama has no OSHA-approved plan for state and local government workers, so federal OSHA does not cover public employees. Private contractors working for the county are covered. Public agencies often adopt accredited certification as their own policy anyway.
