Pike County Crane Work: From Missile Assembly Halls to Lumber Yards
Defense manufacturing is the headline in Pike County. Lockheed Martin’s missile complex outside Troy is in the middle of a multi-year expansion, and a Sikorsky helicopter plant sits in the same town. Around those sit a large plastics recycler, a firearms maker, a lead recycler and a lumber mill, which together give contractors a steady list of equipment installs and building projects. Our online prep helps county residents get ready for accredited certification exams at their own pace. For the city itself, visit our Troy page.
A missile complex that keeps growing
Lockheed Martin’s Pike County Operations covers several thousand acres used for manufacturing, testing and storage on programs including Javelin, THAAD and JASSM. The company has said it will invest more than $150 million over five years to grow production, and it broke ground on an 87,000-square-foot munitions production center, called Building 47, meant to nearly double production space and support the Next Generation Interceptor.
New buildings of that size bring steel erection, precast and roof equipment lifts, all done by contractors whose operators must meet the federal certification rule. Inside secure facilities, procedures are strict, and a credential that shows you already know load charts and signals is one less thing to sort out during badging.
Who else lifts in the county
- Lockheed’s Sikorsky plant in Troy, which won a 2023 contract to build 45 MH-60T airframes for the Coast Guard
- KW Plastics, a large plastics recycler that turns post-consumer material into resin
- Kimber Manufacturing, which moved its production and headquarters to Troy
- Sanders Lead and Rex Lumber, both heavy users of material handling and maintenance rigging
- Troy University, the county’s largest non-manufacturing employer, with ongoing campus construction
Weather to plan around
South-central Alabama is hot and humid for much of the year. Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms with lightning and sudden gusts, and the Gulf hurricane season can push tropical storm winds and heavy rain inland as far as Troy. Spring brings tornado risk. A sound lift plan sets wind limits from the manufacturer’s chart, accounts for sail area on panels and roof units, and names who calls the stop.
Sandy and clay soils across the county react differently after soaking rain, so ground checks before setting outriggers are not optional. Both topics appear regularly on the written operator exams.
Highway work matters here too. U.S. 231 and U.S. 29 both pass through Troy, and bridge replacements, culverts and drainage structures on rural routes bring hydraulic cranes and precast deliveries to roadside sites with traffic control in place. Short setups on road shoulders call for careful outrigger placement and attention to slopes.
Federal rules, no state license
Alabama is a federal OSHA state; inspections for private employers come out of OSHA’s Birmingham and Mobile area offices. Neither the state nor the City of Troy licenses crane operators. Subpart CC governs construction lifting: certification and employer evaluation for operators under 1926.1427, qualified signal persons under 1926.1428, and qualified riggers under 1926.1425 and 1926.1404. In-plant overhead cranes follow 29 CFR 1910.179.
Employers who want help reviewing their crane program can turn to UA SafeState for free, confidential consultation that does not lead to citations. See the Alabama requirements guide for more.
Questions people ask
Do I need a security clearance to work cranes at the missile plant?
Access rules are set by the facility and the contract, not by crane certification. Your certification shows crane competence; the employer handles badging and any clearance requirements.
Which certification suits a Pike County steel erector?
Operators usually pursue mobile crane operator, while connectors and ground crew benefit from Rigger Level 1 and the signal person course.
How do the written and practical exams work?
Written exams are available through Online Proctored Testing, computer test centers or test events. The practical is a hands-on exam on an actual crane. Our course prepares you for the written portion; it does not replace the practical.
Can I enroll several employees at once?
Yes. Send a note through the enrollment form and an advisor will reply about crew enrollment.
Is there a crane license I need from the City of Troy?
No. Troy does not license crane operators, and neither does the state. What matters is accredited certification under the federal rule plus your employer’s evaluation. A street-use permit may be needed if a crane blocks a city road.
