Ozark Crews: Get Ready for Your Crane Certification Exams

Ozark's mayor calls it an aviation-related city, and with Fort Rucker just down the road that is no exaggeration. But the newest cranes on the Ozark skyline have been working in the industrial park, where a rubber flooring maker and other manufacturers have set up shop. If you rig, signal or operate on those jobs, our online course lets you study for accredited certification written exams from your phone, tablet or laptop on your own schedule.

What has been going up in Ozark

Ecore International picked Ozark for a $25.5 million plant that turns recycled truck tires into rubber flooring. Earlier, in 2021, Brittanie's Thyme moved its skincare and plastic container manufacturing into the Ozark Industrial Park with a $685,000 investment and 50 jobs. Plant projects like these follow a familiar sequence for a lift crew: steel erection, roof decking and rooftop equipment, then the process machinery that has to be set and leveled inside.

Across Dale and Geneva counties, Hecate Energy was reported in 2022 as the operator of a $96 million solar farm. Utility-scale solar is mostly pile driving and racking, but transformers, switchgear and substation pieces arrive heavy and need a crane and a rigging plan.

For a smaller city, that adds up to a lot of different lifting: structural steel, precast walls, mechanical units on roofs, and heavy production machinery that has to be landed on anchor bolts within fractions of an inch. Each phase can involve a different contractor and a different crane, which is why general contractors in the park often ask subcontractors for proof that operators are certified and that riggers and signal persons are qualified before they set up.

The aviation side of the economy

M1 Support Services, which handles maintenance and logistics for Army and Air Force aircraft at Fort Rucker, and Commercial Jet are among the aviation firms Business Alabama lists for Ozark. Coastal Alabama Community College keeps a branch campus in town focused on aviation maintenance training for Army aviation jobs.

Maintenance work leans on overhead cranes and hoists covered by OSHA's general industry standard. Construction around hangars and airfields uses mobile and articulating cranes under Subpart CC, often with height limits near runways and a signal person who stays in radio contact the whole pick.

How the federal rules apply in Dale County

There is no Alabama crane operator license and no Ozark permit to run a crane. Federal OSHA covers private employers in the state. Under 29 CFR 1926.1427, an operator on a construction site needs certification from an accredited testing organization and an evaluation by the employer. Section 1926.1428 sets the bar for signal persons, and 1926.1404 and 1926.1425 require qualified riggers for assembly, disassembly and many hoisting tasks.

Our requirements page explains those rules in plain terms, including how they differ from the overhead crane rules inside a plant.

Heat, storms and soft ground

Southeast Alabama summers are long, hot and humid, with pop-up storms most afternoons. Gulf hurricanes and tropical storms can push damaging winds inland this far. Low ground near creeks holds water after heavy rain, so cribbing and mats deserve a fresh look after every storm, and outrigger pads that were firm last week may not be today.

Dale County crews often split their week between town and jobs near Fort Rucker, Enterprise and Dothan, so it pays to plan for different ground and access on each site. Write the setup details into the lift plan rather than relying on memory from the last job.

Questions people ask

Which course should a new industrial park hire start with?

Most people starting out begin with Rigger Level I or signal person, since those roles come before running the crane on many crews. Operators usually choose mobile crane operator.

Can I take the written exam without leaving Ozark?

NCCCO offers Online Proctored Testing for written exams, along with computer test centers and test events. The practical exam has to be taken in person on a crane.

Does online prep include hands-on crane time?

No. The course prepares you for written exams. Seat time and the practical exam come from your employer, a training provider or a test site.
