Talladega County Crane Certification: Auto Plants, Minerals and the I-20 Corridor

Two industries shape lifting work in Talladega County. Up north near Lincoln, Honda's assembly and engine plant and its suppliers run around the clock, and every model changeover or new line means dies, presses, robots and conveyors moving in and out. Down south around Sylacauga, white marble in the ground feeds some of the biggest calcium carbonate operations anywhere. Between them sit Talladega, the county seat, and a lot of construction, utility and highway work along Interstate 20. This page covers the county as a whole; see our separate pages for Talladega and Sylacauga.

The Honda effect on crane demand

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama is the county's top employer, with roughly 4,500 associates by Business Alabama's count (the county's development agency lists a higher figure). The plant builds the Odyssey, Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline along with the V-6 engines that power them. Large suppliers have followed: the Talladega County Economic Development Authority lists New South Express, a Honda parts supplier, and Nemak, which makes motor vehicle components, among its biggest employers.

Inside an auto plant, much of the lifting happens on overhead bridge cranes covered by general industry rule 29 CFR 1910.179. When contractors come in to install equipment or expand a building, though, mobile cranes, tower cranes on bigger builds, and certified riggers become part of the job, and the construction crane standard in Subpart CC applies. Millwrights and riggers who move between those two worlds benefit from a credential that is recognized everywhere.

Sylacauga's mineral operations

Imerys runs what the Encyclopedia of Alabama describes as the world's largest operating calcium carbonate mine at Sylacauga, and in 2022 the company announced an expansion at the plant it calls its largest site in North America. Omya operates a separate plant there producing filler and coating grades for paper and packaging. The Alabama Marble, Mineral and Mining Company quarries block marble nearby.

One distinction matters for anyone working these sites: quarries and mines are regulated by MSHA, not OSHA, so OSHA's operator certification rule does not automatically govern the pit itself. Contractors doing construction at processing plants, and employers who simply want a recognized standard for their operators, still lean on NCCCO certification.

Ground, weather and the drive to testing

Talladega County runs from the Coosa River on the west up into ridges of the southern Appalachian foothills on the east. Red clay holds water after rain, and sloped sites need careful leveling and cribbing. Spring tornado season and summer thunderstorms with lightning and gusts interrupt lifts regularly; operators are expected to know the manufacturer's wind limits and when to stop.

I-20 makes Birmingham the usual destination for practical exams and test events. Written exams can also be taken remotely through Online Proctored Testing or at a computer test center.

What Alabama requires

Alabama does not license crane operators at the state level, and neither does the city of Talladega. Federal OSHA covers private employers here and requires accredited operator certification plus an employer evaluation (1926.1427), along with qualified signal persons and riggers. Full details are in our Alabama certification requirements.

Questions people ask

I run an overhead crane at a supplier plant. Do I need NCCCO?

Overhead cranes in general industry fall under 1910.179, which requires trained operators but not the Subpart CC certification. Many plants still prefer a certified operator, and if you also run mobile cranes on construction work, certification is required.

Which course suits a plant millwright?

Most start with Rigger Level 1 and Signal Person. Millwrights who plan multi-crane or engineered lifts often move on to Rigger Level 2.

Can I study during breaks on a plant shift?

Yes. The course is self-paced, works on any phone, tablet or laptop and is open 24/7, so a 20-minute break is usable study time.

Does a Honda supplier job count as general industry or construction?

Both can happen in the same building. Running the plant's own overhead cranes is general industry work under Part 1910. When a contractor brings in a mobile crane to install a press line or erect an addition, that lift is construction under Subpart CC, and the certification rule applies to the operator.
