Talladega County · Alabama’s marble belt
Sylacauga Crane Certification: Online Prep for the Marble City
Sylacauga calls itself the Marble City, and the name is literal. A long belt of white marble runs under this part of Talladega County, and Imerys, the French minerals company that mines it, describes its Sylacauga operation as its largest site in North America and home to the world’s largest calcium carbonate open-pit mine. For crane operators and riggers, that raises a question most Alabama towns never face: which federal agency covers your lift? This page sorts that out, looks at the rest of the work around town, and explains how our self-paced course prepares you for accredited certification exams.
Inside a marble processing operation
Imerys grinds Sylacauga marble into ground calcium carbonate used in paints, plastics, rubber and food fortification. In April 2022 the company announced a capacity expansion and optimization program for the site, built around a new ore crusher that came online at the end of 2021, with the goal of nearly doubling what the existing equipment could produce and supporting more than 35 specialty products. Back in 2004 it consolidated three separate Sylacauga plants into one larger operation.
Projects like those are full of heavy, awkward picks: crusher frames, mill shells, classifiers, conveyors, silos and bagging equipment, often set inside crowded structures with little headroom. Weights have to be worked out from drawings, and rigging must be planned around steelwork that was never designed as a lifting point. That is exactly the material covered in Rigger Level II. Fine mineral dust is the everyday hazard, working its way into wire rope, sheaves and hydraulic fittings, so daily inspection matters more here than on a typical site.
Mine property or job site: who’s in charge?
Cranes used at a mine or quarry, including the processing plants that belong to the mine operation, are regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. OSHA’s construction crane rule and its operator certification requirement don’t govern on mine property, although many mine operators still prefer certified operators.
Step off that property onto a commercial building, a road project or a contractor’s plant job, and federal OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC applies: certification from an accredited body plus an employer evaluation for operators, and qualified signal persons and riggers. A card earned for construction follows you wherever you work, which is a good reason to hold one even if you started at the mine.
A mill town that changed
Textiles once rivaled marble here. Avondale Mills ran plants in Sylacauga for decades before the company shut down, and its closures top the list of layoff notices on record for the city. Manufacturing employed about four in ten workers in the Talladega–Sylacauga micropolitan area in a 2017 analysis. Up US 280 toward Childersburg, Domtar announced in March 2026 that it would indefinitely idle the Coosa Pines pulp mill by May, so don’t plan on the maintenance outages that used to pull crane crews to that site.
For many local jobs the crane is a boom truck or small hydraulic unit and the operator also does the rigging. Knowing both halves of the lift, chart and slings, makes a one-person setup safer and makes you more valuable to a small contractor.
- Equipment changeouts and expansions at mineral and metal plants.
- Commercial and medical construction along US 280.
- Pole setting and line work with digger derricks and boom trucks.
- Dock and home building toward Lay Lake to the west.
Getting through exam day
US 280 runs northwest to the Birmingham metro, the nearest large testing area, and the written exam can also be taken by online proctored testing. Practical exams are hands-on at a test site arranged through the certifying body, and online prep never replaces them. Alabama has no state crane license. Our requirements guide covers the details.
Work the practice questions until load chart problems feel routine. Those calculations trip up more candidates than any other topic.
Questions people ask
I run a crane at the marble mine. Do I need NCCCO certification?
MSHA, not OSHA’s construction crane rule, covers crane use on mine property, so that rule doesn’t require certification there. Many employers still ask for it, and you’ll need it for OSHA-covered construction work.
Which course helps with plant equipment changeouts?
Rigger Level II for planning complex picks, plus mobile crane operator if you’ll run the crane.
Can I study during night shifts?
Yes. The course is available 24/7 on a phone, tablet or laptop.
What if my job splits time between the mine and outside contractors?
An accredited certification covers you on the OSHA side, while the mine operator handles MSHA training. Keep records of both, and use the enrollment form for individual or company enrollment.
