Halfway Between Two Metros: Crane Exam Prep for Clanton

Drivers on I-65 know Clanton by the giant peach: a 120-foot water tower holding 500,000 gallons, built in 1992 by Chicago Bridge and Iron near Exit 212. That tower is a fair symbol for the town. Orchards still define the county, but the paychecks increasingly come from seating plants, foundries and a Boise Cascade mill, and from commutes to job sites in Birmingham and Montgomery. East of town, Alabama Power’s Mitchell Dam holds back the Coosa. This page walks through what that mix means for operators and riggers, and how to prepare for written certification exams from home.

Plants that keep Chilton County crews busy

Business Alabama’s county profile puts Adient at the top of the employer list, with roughly 850 people building automotive seats in Clanton. Second is Kumi Manufacturing of Alabama, a plastic injection molder whose presses run from 110 to 2,000 tons. Injection molds for a press that size are heavy, dense blocks, and swapping them is precise rigging work, usually done with the plant’s overhead crane and a careful look at the lifting eyes.

Others on the list include Franklin Iron Works, which pours ductile iron castings for water, power and trucking customers, and Ubique Technologies, a Patrick Industries company making fiberglass and core kits for boat builders. Up the road in Thorsby, Boise Cascade added I-joist production to its engineered wood mill as part of a $140 million investment. Every one of those buildings takes in machinery, roof units and structural steel, and contractors setting them need certified hands.

Coosa River ground and storm season

Mitchell Dam, Alabama Power’s second hydro plant, was finished in 1923 near Verbena on the Chilton–Coosa line, with Lay Lake just upstream. The Coosa developments have been through a long federal relicensing fight that included plans for erosion repair and shoreline monitoring. For a crane crew, the takeaway is practical: lake lots sit on slopes and fill, and outriggers placed near a bank or seawall can sink or slide. Size mats to the load and keep setups back from edges.

Away from the water, the orchard soils west of town shift from sand to clay between fields and hold rain for days. Spring brings tornado watches and straight-line winds across central Alabama, and summer afternoons build lightning. Settle wind limits and a stop rule before the first pick, and look up before you set up: distribution lines follow almost every county road.

Courses that fit

Pick the machine you run most and add a second card later; lessons are organized by course. Operators close to the five-year mark can use the recertification course. A logged 1,000 hours of crane-related time during the period can excuse you from the recert practical.

Small shops, same federal duty

A two-truck outfit in Chilton County carries the same obligations on a construction site as a national contractor. Under Subpart CC the person at the controls holds a card from an accredited certifier and gets checked out by the employer on the specific crane (29 CFR 1926.1427). Whoever hooks loads in the fall zone has to be a qualified rigger (1926.1425), and a qualified signaler takes over when the operator loses sight of the load (1926.1428). Subpart CC also spells out which digger derrick and knuckle-boom tasks are covered and which are excluded, so read those sections closely.

There is no Alabama crane license to apply for; federal OSHA polices private employers here. UA SafeState offers free, confidential consultation visits with no citations attached. See our requirements guide for the full picture.

Questions people ask

Is it better to test in Birmingham or Montgomery?

Either is roughly an hour up or down I-65. The written exam can also be taken through Online Proctored Testing, so travel may only be needed for the practical.

I set poles for a co-op. Does digger derrick certification apply to me?

Utility work under OSHA’s power line standards can be handled differently from construction. Ask your employer which rules govern your tasks; many still require an accredited digger derrick card.

Does the online course include the practical exam?

No. It prepares you for written exams. The practical is hands-on at a practical test site.

Can I study on my phone during a break at the plant?

Yes. The course runs on phones, tablets and laptops and keeps your place.
