Crane and Rigging Exam Prep for Chilton County Workers

Chilton County sits halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery on Interstate 65, and that location shapes almost every lift made here. Trucks of steel, lumber and plastic resin come off three interstate exits into plants that need overhead cranes, boom trucks and riggers who know their hitches. Peach orchards still cover the hills, but the payroll leaders are factories. Our self-paced prep lets operators and riggers in Clanton, Thorsby, Jemison and Maplesville study for national certification exams on a phone or laptop, between shifts, without driving to a classroom.

Where the lifting happens

Adient’s 364,000-square-foot automotive seating plant in Clanton is the county’s biggest employer, with more than 1,000 workers, and it added a program for the Nissan P42 in 2026. Kumi Manufacturing runs plastic injection molding in Clanton too. Molds and press components in a plant like that are swapped with overhead cranes and hoists, which fall under the general industry rules at 29 CFR 1910.179 rather than the construction crane standard.

Thorsby is the county’s heavy-industry pocket. Boise Cascade makes plywood and engineered wood there, and its new BCI Joist line, part of a $140 million investment across three mills, became fully operational in early 2026. Franklin Iron Works, also in Thorsby, pours ductile iron castings for water systems, trucking and construction. Down in Maplesville, West Fraser runs a sawmill and South Coast Paper has a production plant. Mill expansions, press installs and maintenance outages bring in contractor cranes and rigging crews on short notice.

What federal rules ask of an operator here

Alabama does not license crane operators, and Clanton has no local card either. On construction work, the requirement comes from federal OSHA: 29 CFR 1926.1427 calls for certification through an accredited body plus an evaluation by your employer, and 1926.1428 and 1926.1425 cover qualified signal persons and riggers. Because Alabama has no OSHA state plan, private-sector sites in Chilton County answer to federal OSHA, which keeps Alabama area offices in Birmingham and Mobile.

Small employers who want a second look at their lifting program can ask UA SafeState at the University of Alabama for a free, confidential consultation that does not lead to citations. Our Alabama requirements guide explains how these pieces fit together.

Weather, ground and the river

Alabama Power’s Lay Dam, the company’s first major project and in service since 1914, sits on the Coosa River at the county’s eastern edge near Clanton, and Mitchell Dam is just downstream on the Chilton–Coosa line. Work around powerhouses, intakes and shoreline structures means lifting near water, on fill and sometimes near energized lines.

Central Alabama summers bring heat, humidity and fast-building afternoon thunderstorms; spring and late fall carry tornado risk. Red clay that turns soft after a soaking rain is common on rural sites. Each of those conditions ties directly to written exam topics: wind limits, outrigger support, cribbing and keeping clearance from power lines.

Planning exam day from Clanton

Written exams can be taken through online proctored testing, a computer test center or a scheduled test event. The practical exam is always hands-on at a practical site, and online study never stands in for it. From Clanton, both Birmingham and Montgomery are about an hour up or down I-65, so most candidates have test options in either direction. Crews can enroll as a group through our enrollment form.

Questions people ask

Do Boise Cascade or Adient maintenance techs need NCCCO certification?

Overhead cranes inside a plant fall under general industry rules, which require trained, qualified operators but not necessarily an accredited card. Many employers still ask for one, and anyone running a mobile crane on construction work in the county needs certification under 1926.1427.

How long does a certification last?

Five years. To renew, you pass a written recertification exam, and logging 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during the period can excuse you from retaking the practical.

Can I study during a rotating shift schedule?

Yes. The course runs on any device at any hour, and your place is saved, so you can pick up a few practice questions on a break and continue at home.

Which course fits a boom truck delivering trusses around Jemison?

A knuckle-boom unit points to the articulating crane course; a telescopic boom truck with a fixed cab usually lines up with the mobile crane program’s boom truck categories. Ask through the form if you are unsure.
