Bibb County Crane Certification for Mechanical, Timber and Plant Crews

Bibb County straddles the Cahaba River between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, with the Talladega National Forest covering much of its southern woods. It is a small county, but it holds a mechanical contractor that ranks among its biggest employers, a veneer plant that just changed hands, and an industrial park in the north end tied to the auto supply chain. Each of those depends on people who can run a crane or rig a load correctly.

Centreville’s employers and the crane work behind them

The Bibb County Chamber lists Burkes Mechanical at the top of its major employers. Industrial mechanical contracting means setting equipment, piping and structural steel, much of it by crane, and a contractor that size sends crews well beyond county lines. Tri-Wil and Randolph & Randolph also appear on the chamber’s list.

Timber has been a mainstay since the lumber boom of the twentieth century. Cahaba Timber Company and Cahaba Veneer both rank among the county’s larger employers. In April 2026, Manthei Wood Products acquired Cahaba Veneer in Centreville, keeping 67 jobs, adding 37 and planning up to $10 million in capital investment. Upgrades at a veneer mill mean new lathes, dryers and conveyors lifted into place.

North Bibb and the Mercedes supply chain

The Scott G. Davis Industrial Park in the north of the county hosts Mollertech and Thyssenkrupp, according to the county development office, along with a logistics center supporting Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle and battery production. The Mercedes campus in neighboring Tuscaloosa County is a short drive away. Auto supplier plants rely on overhead cranes for dies and tooling and bring in mobile cranes whenever lines are added or rearranged.

Rules that apply, and one that does not

Bibb County was once coal country, with several mines in the Cahaba coalfield, most notably at Blocton. Any crane work at an active mine or quarry today would fall under MSHA, not the OSHA construction crane standard, so check with the operator if you take a job on mine property.

Everywhere else, private-sector crane work is policed by federal OSHA; Alabama has no state plan. Construction lifts follow Subpart CC: accredited operator certification and an employer evaluation under 1926.1427, a qualified signal person under 1926.1428 and qualified riggers under 1926.1425. Alabama does not add a license on top. Details are in the Alabama requirements guide.

Courses to look at first

Woods, hills and humid summers

Much of Bibb County is wooded ridges and creek bottoms. Narrow county roads and sloped lots make crane access and level setup harder than on flat ground, and wet clay after storms can hide soft spots under outrigger pads. Summer heat and humidity are routine, and pop-up thunderstorms bring lightning that halts any lift in progress.

Forest roads in the Oakmulgee side of the national forest and around logging tracts are often unpaved, so getting a crane in and out is part of the plan, not an afterthought.

Questions people ask

How long a drive is it to a bigger metro for testing?

Centreville is roughly an hour from both Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, which is where many central Alabama candidates find practical test events. Written exams can be taken through online proctoring, so you may only need to travel for the practical.

I work for a mechanical contractor and travel. Does my card follow me?

Yes. NCCCO certification is recognized nationally, so a Bibb County mechanic or rigger who travels to plant jobs in other states keeps the same card. Your employer on each job still performs its own evaluation of you on the equipment you will run.

Can I study if I only have a phone?

Yes. The course works on phones, tablets and laptops, and you can pick up where you left off at any hour.

Does online prep count as my practical exam?

No. Online study gets you ready for the written exams and helps you understand what the practical will cover, but the hands-on test is always taken in person at a practical test site.
