Talladega Operators and Riggers: Get Exam-Ready Online

Outside Alabama, Talladega means the superspeedway in the north end of the county. Locally it also means a working county seat, a Georgia-Pacific lumber mill, and a short commute to one of the state’s biggest auto plants in nearby Lincoln. Lifting work here swings from grandstand steel and event rigging to plant expansions, mill equipment and highway bridges. Our self-paced online course helps Talladega operators, riggers and signal persons prepare for the written exams of nationally accredited crane certifications.

What the speedway project looked like

Talladega Superspeedway’s “Transformation” project, announced in 2018, rebuilt the infield with a new garage of 44 stalls, suites and a fan walkway, among other features. Coverage put the cost at about $50 million; the Governor’s Office later broke out roughly $52.9 million in construction spending. Hoar Construction was the general contractor and DLR Group designed it, with completion scheduled for October 2019 so the track could keep hosting races between phases.

Venue work like that has a rhythm of its own. Steel and roof framing go up between race weekends, temporary stages, lighting towers and video boards come in and out for events, and everything runs on fixed dates. Operators on open infield ground deal with wind on large sail-area loads, and they work around tents, fans and vehicles. A written lift plan, a barricaded swing radius and a qualified signal person are what keep a deadline from becoming an incident.

Plants and mills around the county seat

Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln builds the Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline and Acura MDX along with V-6 engines, with capacity for about 340,000 vehicles a year. Between 2017 and 2021 Honda invested roughly $150 million in phases that added more than 425,000 square feet to its two assembly lines, and close to 30 Tier One suppliers have grown up around Honda’s Alabama operations. Plant expansions of that kind bring in steel erectors, machinery movers and crane rental crews to set presses, robots and conveyors.

In Talladega itself, Georgia-Pacific announced a $100 million lumber production facility in 2017, planned for more than 100 workers. Sawmills are crane-heavy to build and maintain: debarkers, saw lines, kilns, planer mills and log yards all involve heavy, awkward lifts and frequent equipment swaps.

  • Line and press changeouts at auto plants and suppliers.
  • Kiln, saw line and conveyor work at sawmills.
  • Bridge, culvert and widening work on state routes maintained by ALDOT.
  • Pole setting with digger derricks after storms knock out lines.

Heat, clay and spring storms

Central Alabama summers are long and humid, afternoon thunderstorms form fast, and spring can bring tornado warnings. Red clay holds water and loses strength when saturated, so mats and a second look at the ground after rain are standard. On ridge sites, level the crane and make sure the chart you use matches the actual radius and boom length.

Long July days on hot asphalt also wear people down, and fatigue leads to missed signals. Rotate crews, schedule water breaks and keep radio checks short and clear.

Federal rules, not a state card

Alabama issues no crane operator license, and Talladega adds none. On private construction, federal OSHA applies 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC: accredited certification and an employer evaluation for the operator, a qualified signal person for blind picks and qualified riggers. Limestone and sand quarries in the region fall under MSHA instead. See the requirements guide.

Questions people ask

Is there a certification for directing event or venue lifts?

Yes. The signal person course prepares you for the signal person certification, which covers hand and voice signals for directing a crane.

Where would I test from Talladega?

Written exams can be taken through online proctored testing, at a computer test center or at a test event; the Birmingham metro is the nearest large testing area. The practical is always taken on a crane at a test site.

Does the course include practice questions?

Yes. It includes exam-style practice questions and works on phones, tablets and computers.

How long does certification last once I pass?

Five years. Recertification requires a written exam, and 1,000 hours of crane-related experience can waive the practical.

Do digger derrick operators need certification?

Digger derricks used for pole work have their own NCCCO program, and some utility work has specific exemptions under the federal rules. Our digger derrick course prepares you for that written exam.
