Study for Crane Certification in Oxford, Alabama
Oxford is the side of Calhoun County that faces the interstate. I-20 runs through town, and near the exits sit Alabama’s largest steel fabrication subcontractor, a seating plant that supplies Honda, and an industrial park that is about to grow. A few miles away, Anniston Army Depot is in the middle of a modernization worth close to a billion dollars. All of it moves on hooks. Our online course gives Oxford-area operators, riggers and signal persons a flexible way to get ready for the written exams of accredited crane certifications.
Steel leaves the yard on a hook
FabArc Steel Supply started in 1979 in a tent on a field near Oxford and has grown into the biggest steel fabrication subcontractor in Alabama. It is employee-owned, runs two plants with more than 300,000 square feet of shop space near I-20, and has shifted from hospital steel in its early years to automotive plants and, lately, electric-vehicle battery factories. Goodgame Co. of Pell City is building the firm a 25,000-square-foot headquarters on Meadow Lane.
Fabricated beams and columns get picked off racks, loaded onto trailers and lifted again on site, often by a knuckle boom on the delivery truck. Each pick depends on knowing the weight, finding the balance point and protecting slings from sharp flange edges. Drivers who set their own loads fit the articulating crane course; yard crews who rig and direct lifts should look at Rigger Level I and signal person.
Seats, depot work and a bigger industrial park
Bridgewater Interiors has built seat systems in Oxford since 2003; the city lists its products as seats for the Honda Pilot, and a $10 million expansion added equipment and a building addition. Supplier plants like that install conveyors, presses and rooftop HVAC during short line-down windows, when there is no time to look up a sling capacity.
At Anniston Army Depot, a $44 million combat vehicle welding facility opened in May 2026, and the Army launched its FORGE construction program there with an award valued near $987 million. Closer to town, the Calhoun County EDC won a $2.06 million state SEEDS grant in 2026 to prepare 115 acres that will push the Oxford West industrial park to about 530 acres. Graded pads mean new buildings, and new buildings mean steel erection.
Things that trip up crews here
- Retail lots and frontage roads off the interchanges that leave little room for outriggers and swing.
- Overhead lines along commercial corridors, a leading cause of serious crane incidents.
- Fresh cut-and-fill industrial pads that may not be fully compacted, and clay that softens after rain.
- Spring tornado watches and summer lightning that halt picks with little warning.
No license, but certification still required
Nobody in Montgomery or at Oxford City Hall hands out a crane license. On construction work, federal OSHA applies Subpart CC directly: an accredited card and an employer evaluation for whoever runs the crane, and qualified people doing the signaling and rigging. Small Alabama employers can ask UA SafeState for a free, no-citation review of their crane program. Read more in our requirements guide.
Questions people ask
Is Birmingham the closest place to sit an exam?
It’s about an hour west on I-20 and has in-person options. Written exams can also be taken through Online Proctored Testing. Practicals happen on a crane at a site booked through the certifying body.
I drive a steel delivery truck with a crane. Which certification fits?
It depends on the machine. Knuckle booms fit the articulating crane program, and small telescopic cranes on service trucks fit the service truck crane program. An enrollment advisor can help you choose.
How long do I have to study?
As long as you need. The course is self-paced and works on phones, tablets and laptops.
Can my employer sign up a group?
Yes, company enrollment is available through the enrollment form.
Does my certification from Oxford work in Georgia or Tennessee?
NCCCO certification is national, so it goes with you. Tennessee runs its own OSHA State Plan, but neither neighbor issues a general state crane operator license. Check rules for any specific city first.
