Auburn Crane Exam Prep for Campus and Plant Crews

Auburn has two construction engines running at once. Auburn University reported $421.8 million in projects under construction in spring 2025, and its board has approved a $323 million addition at the north end of Jordan-Hare Stadium, with work expected to start in summer 2026. Meanwhile Auburn Technology Park West keeps landing manufacturers, from Italian and Korean suppliers to a synthetic leather maker. Both kinds of work need operators, riggers and signal persons who can show an accredited card. Our self-paced course gets you ready for the written exams on your own schedule and device.

Jordan-Hare North and the campus build-out

The stadium addition is a multipurpose facility and plaza tied into the existing north end zone, with completion targeted for spring 2029. Project descriptions call for significant vertical construction, structural tie-ins to the old stadium and phased scheduling so work does not collide with football seasons and major events. That is a recipe for long crane commitments, tight swing-radius control and lifts planned around home football weekends.

Elsewhere on campus, Facilities Management’s 2025 update listed a STEM and Agricultural Sciences Complex, a Lowder Hall renovation by Webb Construction Group and a College of Education building by Rabren General Contractors. Campus sites share the same headaches: little laydown room, steel and precast picked straight off the truck, and swing paths over sidewalks between class changes.

Plant work in Technology Park West

The 2026 announcements alone are a long list. Vulcaflex picked the park for its first U.S. plant, a nearly $70 million investment with 130 jobs. Seohan Auto USA announced a $64 million expansion in the park’s Annex II. 2A USA, an aluminum die caster, committed $32 million. Vertex Innovations is putting $13.5 million into an existing building, DUCK IL USA about $21 million, and German chain maker Kettenwulf is starting a manufacturing operation in the city.

Plant projects like these mean presses, die-casting cells and conveyors landed through roof openings or skated in through dock doors, plus rooftop units on every new building. The machinery rigger who verifies a center of gravity is worth as much as the operator on those jobs.

Who needs which card

On construction sites, the federal crane standard expects three different qualifications. The operator must pass an accredited certification and an employer evaluation on the crane in question (29 CFR 1926.1427). The person directing a load the operator cannot see must be a qualified signal person (1926.1428). Anyone attaching loads inside the fall zone must be a qualified rigger (1926.1425). Signal and rigging credentials are smart first steps for laborers and apprentices aiming for the seat.

Alabama and the City of Auburn issue no crane license. Federal OSHA covers private contractors, including those on university projects. University employees themselves are a different matter, because Alabama has no OSHA-approved plan for public workers. Our requirements guide explains the details.

Wind, clay and how to study

Lee County took a direct hit on March 3, 2019, when an EF4 tornado killed 23 people around Beauregard and Smiths Station. Spring lines still cross east Alabama every year, and summer heat feeds afternoon lightning. Tall booms and tower cranes feel gusts at the tip long before the ground crew does, so agree on wind and lightning stop rules before rigging begins. Red clay turns soft after rain; mat every outrigger on fresh pads.

The course runs on a phone, tablet or laptop at any hour and saves your progress. When you’re ready, book the written exam through the certifying body by Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a test event. The practical is always taken on a real crane. Contractors can request crew enrollment through the form.

Questions people ask

I am an Auburn student working construction in the summer. Where should I start?

Signal Person or Rigger Level I. Both are useful on nearly any site and build the knowledge an operator needs later.

Will the stadium project use tower cranes?

Published descriptions don’t say. Tower crane certification is a separate program from mobile cranes, with its own written and practical exams, so check what your contractor plans to run.

Is Opelika part of the same job market?

Largely, yes. The cities share a border and crews work both. See our Opelika page.

Does online study replace the practical test?

No. The hands-on practical is still taken through the certifying body.
