Opelika Crane Certification Study That Fits Plant Schedules

Opelika is the working half of the Auburn-Opelika metro. The Lee County seat sits where I-85 meets US-280, and its industrial parks have filled with supplement, bottling, automotive and now defense operations. In 2026 alone the city approved a $79 million electrical-assembly plant and welcomed a howitzer integration site. That is different work from the campus jobs next door: machinery installs, plant shutdowns and boom trucks backing into loading docks. Our self-paced online course prepares you for the written part of an accredited crane, rigging or signal person certification, so you can study around rotating shifts.

Where the lifting happens

The Northeast Opelika Industrial Park holds several of the city’s heaviest users. Pharmavite and HL Mando America both sit in the city’s top employer tier, and Niagara Bottling announced a $112 million production plant in the park in 2022. In February 2026 the council approved Faith Technologies, which is spending more than $79 million to buy and refit the former JoAnn Stores distribution center for its Excellerate electrical assemblies, with about 200 jobs expected.

Two more 2026 arrivals widen the mix. Hanwha Defense USA named Opelika its U.S. integration and test site for its howitzer family, then won an Army contract to ready six prototype K9 Mobile Howitzers there, with roughly 40 jobs in the first phase. GMB USA Alabama is setting up in the Orr Industrial Park with a $9 million start, building pumps and thermal parts for hybrid vehicles. Converting a warehouse into a factory means pulling racking, cutting roof openings and landing heavy machinery, much of it during short windows.

Shutdown jobs reward preparation

A typical install pairs a hydraulic crane outside, a boom truck at the dock and the plant’s own bridge cranes inside, often run by crews who met that morning. Loads are compact and dense, and the lugs welded to a machine base may not be rated. Good machinery riggers confirm weights from paperwork or a load cell instead of guessing, and agree on one signal person for every blind pick.

Warehouse conversions add tilt-up panels, long-span joists and dock levelers. Tilt-up picks depend on insert locations and a rigging plan from the panel engineer, so riggers need to read drawings, not just hang slings.

After the storms

On March 3, 2019, an EF4 tornado with winds near 170 mph tracked from Macon County into Lee County, killing 23 people around Beauregard and Smiths Station south of Opelika. Rebuilding after storms like that brings boom trucks, service cranes and small hydraulics into neighborhoods full of downed trees, damaged frames and lines that may be re-energized at any moment.

Subpart CC’s power line provisions, including minimum clearances and when a dedicated spotter is required, are some of the most detailed in the rule. Anyone running or signaling a crane on storm work should know them thoroughly.

Choosing your course

Alabama is a federal OSHA state, and neither the state capitol nor Opelika City Hall licenses crane operators. Accredited certification plus an employer evaluation, qualified signalers and qualified riggers are what the federal crane rule demands on construction work; in-plant bridge and gantry cranes answer to the general industry standards instead. UA SafeState offers free, confidential help tightening a crane program without enforcement. The Alabama requirements guide has more.

Questions people ask

How does recertification work?

Cards last five years. Renewal means passing a written recertification exam; 1,000 documented hours of crane-related experience in the period can waive the practical.

Can our plant enroll a maintenance crew together?

Yes. Send the enrollment form and an enrollment advisor will reply about crew enrollment.

Is the practical exam held online?

No. Written exams can go through Online Proctored Testing, but the practical is always hands-on at a crane.

Should a dock or warehouse worker bother with signal person training?

If you ever guide a crane or boom truck where the operator can’t see the load, the rules call for a qualified signal person. It is a short, practical credential and a common first step for ground crews.
