Lee County Crane and Rigging Exam Prep for the I-85 Corridor

Few Alabama counties have added factory floor space as quickly as Lee County. Along I-85, the industrial parks of Opelika and Auburn have taken in Korean and European suppliers, a vitamin maker, a water bottler and, in 2026, a defense integration site, while Auburn University keeps a steady backlog of campus construction. Each of those projects ends with somebody signing off that the crane crew was qualified. Here is what the work looks like county-wide and how to finish the knowledge portion of a national card without leaving your job.

Who lifts heavy in Lee County

Opelika’s published employer list puts Pharmavite and HL Mando America in its top tier at 500 to 999 workers each. Pharmavite opened its supplement plant in the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park in 2013 and later expanded; Mando makes brake and steering parts. Hanwha Advanced Materials, Golden State Foods, Daewon America and Yongsan Automotive fill out the next tiers. Niagara Bottling committed $112 million to a plant in the same park in 2022, and Faith Technologies won council approval in 2026 to turn the former JoAnn distribution center into a $79 million electrical-assembly operation.

Auburn Technology Park West had its own busy 2026: Vulcaflex chose it for a $70 million first U.S. plant, Seohan Auto USA announced a $64 million expansion, and an aluminum die caster added $32 million more. Each building needed steel erected and equipment landed, and every new production line brings riggers back.

What the law actually asks of a crew

Newcomers from licensing states sometimes go looking for an Alabama crane permit. There isn’t one at the state, city or county level. What governs a Lee County construction lift is the federal crane rule, Subpart CC. In plain terms: the seat goes to someone holding a card from an accredited certifier whom the employer has also watched operate that crane (1926.1427). Directing a blind pick is a job for a qualified signaler (1926.1428). During assembly, disassembly and load attachment, qualified riggers do the hooking (1926.1404, 1926.1425).

Once a plant is running, its bridge and gantry cranes shift to the factory-side rules in Part 1910, section 179, with section 180 picking up truck and crawler cranes used outside construction. In both cases, enforcement for private companies comes from federal OSHA’s Birmingham Region rather than any office in Montgomery.

Matching a course to the work

  • Mobile Crane Operator: telescopic and lattice exams for contractors setting plant steel and rooftop units
  • Rigger Level 1: slings, hitches and load control for millwrights and maintenance teams
  • Signal Person: hand signals and radio calls for crowded factory bays and campus sites
  • Articulating Crane Operator: knuckle-boom trucks delivering to industrial parks and new subdivisions

Storm memory and test day

Nobody in Lee County forgets March 3, 2019. An EF4 tornado with 170 mph winds crossed from Macon County through Beauregard toward Smiths Station and killed 23 people. Spring outbreaks still roll through, and July afternoons stack up thunderheads that bring lightning and sudden gusts. Knowing a machine’s wind ratings and the right way to secure a boom shows up on the written test, and it is what keeps a crane standing through a squall line.

When you feel ready, register for the written portion with the certifying body; it can be taken remotely with a live proctor, at a testing center, or at an organized event. The practical is separate and happens hands-on, and no online course stands in for it. Our lessons and practice questions work on whatever device you have, at any hour.

Questions people ask

Do Auburn University construction jobs follow the same certification rule?

Private contractors on or near campus are under federal OSHA and Subpart CC like anywhere else. University employees are a different case, since Alabama has no OSHA-approved plan covering public workers; in practice, project specs on campus usually require accredited certification anyway.

Can our plant sign up an entire maintenance team?

Yes. Multiple employees can be enrolled together, and each moves through the material independently. Send the enrollment form and an advisor will get back to you.

When does my card expire?

After five years. Renewal requires a written recertification exam, and a log of 1,000 crane-related hours across that span can stand in for the recert practical. Mobile Crane Recertification covers the review.

Is there a deeper explanation of the Alabama rules?

Yes. The Alabama crane certification requirements page walks through MSHA sites, employer evaluations and the federal standards in more depth.
