Lawrence County Crane Operator and Rigger Prep, Online
Lawrence County is farm country first. It ranks among Alabama’s top cotton producers and leads the state in adopting precision agriculture. But the Tennessee River and Wheeler Lake run along its northern edge, Decatur’s heavy industry is a short drive east, and more than twenty manufacturers operate inside the county. Many people who live in Moulton, Courtland, Hillsboro or Town Creek earn their living rigging, welding and running cranes, whether at home or across the county line. This page explains how certification works and how to get ready for it on your own time.
Who is lifting in Lawrence County
International Paper has been listed as the county’s largest industrial employer, and Lockheed Martin Space’s targets program heads the list of manufacturers with more than 200 workers. In 2020, CCI Manufacturing USA, a Tier 1 auto supplier, announced a $21.5 million production plant, and Progressive Pipe Fabricators opened a shop expected to employ 50. A pipe fabrication shop handles spools, fittings and long runs of steel that need careful rigging every day.
A recent hiring event in Moulton drew employers including Nucor Steel, 3M, GE Aviation, Daikin America and Thompson Tractor, most of them in the Decatur area. Those plants run big outages and expansions where contract cranes and riggers are essential.
Farm equipment, grain and gins
Cotton gins, grain bins, elevators and irrigation equipment all get built, repaired and moved with cranes and boom trucks. That work is often done by small local outfits with one crane and a couple of riggers, so each person tends to wear several hats. A service truck crane or mobile crane credential paired with Rigger Level 1 covers most of what those crews do.
Gin and grain work tends to peak just before and after harvest, so repair crews end up making a lot of picks in a short season. Lifting a bin ring or a gin stand onto a foundation calls for knowing the weight, picking a proper hitch and keeping helpers clear of the load, which is the core of rigger testing.
River bottoms and the Bankhead forest
Northern Lawrence County is flat river bottom along Wheeler Lake, where soft ground and high water tables make outrigger support a real concern. The south rises into the William B. Bankhead National Forest, with narrow roads, steep grades and timber operations. Both settings appear in exam questions about soil, cribbing, leveling and power-line clearance, and local crews meet them on ordinary jobs.
Spring storms and tornadoes cross the Tennessee Valley most years, and summer heat and humidity wear on crews. Recognizing when wind or lightning makes a lift unsafe is part of operator and signal person testing.
The federal requirement, without the jargon
Alabama has no state crane license. For private construction, federal OSHA requires the operator to be certified by an accredited body and evaluated by the employer before working independently (29 CFR 1926.1427). Signal persons need to be qualified under 1926.1428 and riggers under 1926.1425 and 1926.1404. Overhead and gantry cranes used in ordinary plant production follow 1910.179 and 1910.180.
Our course prepares you for the written exam with exam-style practice questions you can work through on a phone or laptop. The written test is booked with the certifying body by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a test event; the practical is a hands-on test on a crane. Read the Alabama requirements guide for the full picture.
Questions people ask
Will a certification earned here work at Decatur plants?
Yes. NCCCO credentials are national and good for five years, so they go with you to any employer that recognizes them, in Alabama or elsewhere.
Is a small farm crane operator required to certify?
Agricultural work on your own farm usually isn’t construction. If you take a crane onto a construction job, though, Subpart CC applies. When in doubt, ask the general contractor.
Where would I take the practical?
Practical exams are arranged through the certifying body. Many Lawrence County candidates look toward the Decatur and Huntsville area. We don’t list specific test sites.
