Lauderdale County Crane Certification on the North Bank of the Shoals
Lauderdale County takes up the north bank of the Tennessee River in the Shoals, stretching from the Tennessee state line down to the water. The river made this region: Wilson Dam was started during World War I to power nitrate production, became a cornerstone of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and still anchors the local grid. Today the county pairs TVA facilities with river terminals, more than a hundred industrial companies and the University of North Alabama. Crane and rigging work shows up in all of it. For the seat, see our Florence page; this page covers the county as a whole.
Dams and power on the Tennessee
Wilson Dam sits on the river between Lauderdale and Colbert counties near Muscle Shoals. It was built to supply power for wartime nitrate plants, and after Henry Ford’s offer to buy the complex was turned down, TVA took it over. The dam made the river navigable through the old shoals and became the heart of a regional power system.
Hydro plants and locks need periodic heavy maintenance: gates, generator rotors, cranes on the powerhouse deck, transformers in the switchyards. That work blends in-plant gantry cranes with mobile cranes brought by contractors, and it calls for riggers who can plan lifts in confined spaces and over water. Rigger Level 2 is aimed at exactly that level of planning.
Port, plants and shops
The Florence-Lauderdale County Port Authority moves bulk and general cargo on the river, and terminal work brings barge loading, crane mats on fill, and lifts close to the water’s edge. On the industrial side, the Shoals Economic Development Authority counts more than 120 companies in the county, led by Tarkett Alabama, a vinyl flooring maker. Kith Kitchens, a cabinet manufacturer, has announced a Florence expansion of more than 130 jobs.
Across the river in Colbert County, plants such as North American Lighting and Constellium draw many Lauderdale residents. If you commute south for work, the same national certification applies; see our Muscle Shoals and Colbert County pages.
Seasons that affect lifting
North Alabama gets two severe weather seasons, a stronger one in spring and a second in late fall, plus humid summers with afternoon storms. Hilly ground north of Florence toward the state line means slopes and narrow access, while lowland near the river can stay soft after rain. Leveling, ground bearing and wind all get attention on the mobile crane operator exam.
Construction tied to the University of North Alabama and downtown Florence often happens on tight lots beside occupied buildings and busy streets. Lifts there depend on a clear signal person, barricaded fall zones and careful swing planning around power lines and neighboring roofs, topics that come up on both the operator and signal person exams.
Certification requirements, plainly
You won’t find an Alabama crane license, and Florence doesn’t issue one either. Private employers here are under federal OSHA, and Subpart CC sets the bar: an accredited operator certification plus employer evaluation (1926.1427), a qualified signal person (1926.1428) and qualified riggers (1926.1425, 1926.1404). Just north, Tennessee runs its own State Plan through TOSHA, which matters for crews who take work in Lawrenceburg or Pulaski. Neither state issues a general crane license.
We prepare you for the written exams. You then schedule with the certifying body, online proctored or at a center or test event, and complete the hands-on practical in person. Start with our Alabama requirements guide.
Questions people ask
Does TVA work need extra qualifications?
Facility owners and their contractors often set training and site-access requirements beyond OSHA’s minimum. National certification is a common baseline; your employer will spell out anything else.
I passed years ago. How do I recertify?
NCCCO certification lasts five years. You retake a written recertification exam, and 1,000 hours of crane-related experience in that period can waive the practical. Our recertification course covers it.
Can UNA students or part-time workers study this way?
Yes. The course is self-paced and available around the clock, so it fits around classes or a second job.
