Franklin County Crane Training for Motorhome, Poultry and Steel Work

In Franklin County, the biggest private employer builds luxury motorhomes. Tiffin Motorhomes in Red Bay, near the Mississippi line, employs more than 1,200 people, and Pilgrim’s poultry processing in the county employs roughly as many again. Add a pet-food maker, a fireplace-insert manufacturer, a steel fabricator and several home builders, and you have a county where heavy parts and equipment move every day. This page covers which crane and rigging certifications fit Franklin County jobs and how our self-paced online prep helps you get ready for the written exams.

Plants that keep hooks moving

Building a motorhome means lifting chassis components, roofs, slide-out rooms and body panels through the plant, and Tiffin’s Red Bay operation does it at scale. Overhead cranes and hoists are part of the daily workflow, and plant expansions bring mobile cranes for steel and roofing. Governor Kay Ivey visited in 2022 and called Tiffin the largest employer in the area.

Pilgrim’s poultry processing ranks right behind, and poultry plants regularly install chillers, conveyors and refrigeration equipment. Sunshine Mills makes pet food, Innovative Hearth Products builds fireplace inserts and Franklin Manufacturing/G&G Steel fabricates steel. Leisure Creations and modular home builders such as SE Homes and Sunshine Homes round out the list, and moving finished modules or large assemblies is classic rigging work.

Federal rules, local jobs

Alabama issues no crane operator license, and Russellville and Red Bay don’t either. Federal OSHA enforces safety for private employers in the state from area offices in Birmingham and Mobile. On construction work, 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires accredited operator certification plus employer evaluation, 1926.1428 requires qualified signal persons and 1926.1404 and 1926.1425 require qualified riggers. Overhead cranes in production plants are handled under 1910.179.

Mississippi, a short drive west of Red Bay, is also a federal-OSHA state with no general state crane operator license, so the same accredited card serves on both sides of the line for most work. Read the Alabama requirements guide for specifics.

Picking a course

Northwest Alabama job-site conditions

Franklin County’s terrain rolls from farmland around Russellville to wooded hills in the south and west. Clay soils hold water after storms, so plant yards and rural sites can turn soft quickly. Northwest Alabama is tornado country in spring and late fall, and summer thunderstorms bring gusty outflow wind with little warning. Before any pick, check ground bearing, use properly sized mats and watch the forecast against the crane’s wind limits. Expect to see those topics on the written exams.

Exams and enrollment

Written exams can be completed through Online Proctored Testing, at computer test centers or at test events. The practical exam is always taken in person at a practical test site, and online prep doesn’t replace it. The Shoals, around Florence and Muscle Shoals, is about half an hour north of Russellville, and Huntsville and Birmingham are within a couple of hours for practical testing. The course runs on phones, tablets and laptops, and companies can enroll whole crews. An enrollment advisor answers through the form.

Questions people ask

Do overhead crane operators at an RV plant need NCCCO certification?

Production overhead cranes are covered by 29 CFR 1910.179, which requires trained operators rather than a specific certificate. Employers can still require accredited cards, and many people find them useful if they also work construction.

Can a modular home crew use Rigger Level 1 prep?

Yes. Rigger Level 1 covers hitches, sling selection, load control and inspection, all of which apply when a module is set on a foundation.

I work near Red Bay and sometimes cross into Mississippi. Will my card work there?

Mississippi doesn’t issue a general state crane operator license, and NCCCO certification is nationally accredited, so it normally carries over. Check each project’s requirements.

How often do I recertify?

Every five years, with a written recertification exam. Documenting 1,000 hours of crane-related experience can waive the practical. See Mobile Crane Recertification.
