Houston County Crane Certification: Nuclear, Manufacturing and Medical Work
Houston County fills the southeast corner of Alabama, bordered by Georgia across the Chattahoochee and Florida to the south. Dothan is the county seat and the commercial center of the Wiregrass, but the lifting work reaches well beyond the city limits: a two-unit nuclear plant on the river, tire and poultry plants, aviation maintenance and a steady run of hospital and retail construction. This page looks at the county as a whole. For the city itself, see our Dothan crane training page.
Farley Nuclear Plant and outage crews
Alabama Power owns the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant and Southern Nuclear operates it on an 1,850-acre site along the Chattahoochee, about 20 miles east of Dothan. Its two reactors entered commercial service in 1977 and 1981 and together produce about 1,800 megawatts. Refueling outages bring contract crews to the site, and much of that work involves rigging and crane lifts under tight procedures, with heavy components, restricted access and a lot of attention on load control.
People who want outage work often find that a Rigger Level 2 or signal person credential opens doors, along with operator certification for those who run the cranes.
Plants and shops across the county
Business Alabama’s county profiles have named Michelin, Wayne Farms, Georgia-Pacific and Twitchell Technical Products among Houston County’s larger manufacturers; the exact ranking shifts from year to year. Advanced Product Solutions expanded its medical manufacturing center in Dothan in 2022 and added sterilization work in Columbia. Commercial Jet does aircraft maintenance at the Dothan airport.
Manufacturing sites generate two kinds of lifting. Overhead cranes inside the building fall under general-industry rules, 29 CFR 1910.179. When a contractor brings in a mobile crane to set a new press, a chiller or roof equipment, that job is construction and Subpart CC applies.
Building for a regional medical hub
Southeast Health, with about 3,000 employees, is the county’s biggest employer overall, and Flowers Hospital adds roughly 1,100 more. Hospital additions, medical office buildings and retail along the Ross Clark Circle keep general contractors busy. Those jobs call for mobile and sometimes tower cranes, plus riggers and signal persons who can work in crowded, occupied sites.
Retail and medical projects in Dothan also bring a lot of boom truck work: setting rooftop HVAC units, signage, generators and precast pieces. Those smaller machines still fall under the construction crane rule when they hoist loads on a job site, which is why many local operators earn the service truck crane or the TSS specialty that covers fixed-cab boom trucks.
Weather to plan around
The Wiregrass sits close enough to the Gulf that tropical systems matter. Hurricane Michael pushed damaging wind into Houston County in October 2018, and summer thunderstorms bring lightning and gusts most afternoons. Exam questions on wind limits, load sail area and when to suspend operations reflect conditions crews here actually see.
Getting certified from the Wiregrass
No state or city crane license exists in Alabama. Federal OSHA enforces the crane rule for private employers, and 1926.1427 requires both accredited certification and an employer evaluation before an operator works alone. Our self-paced course prepares you for the written exam on any device; you schedule the written test through the certifying body (online proctored, at a test center or at a test event) and take the practical in person on a crane. The requirements guide has the details, and the enrollment form is the way to reach an advisor.
Questions people ask
Does nuclear plant work require something beyond NCCCO certification?
Plant owners set their own site-access, training and qualification rules on top of federal requirements. A national crane or rigging credential is a common baseline, but your employer will tell you what else the site requires.
Can I study during a long outage rotation?
Yes. The course works on a phone and saves your place, so you can study in short stretches between shifts.
Which certification should a new hire at a manufacturing plant start with?
Many start with Rigger Level 1, since nearly every lift needs someone to attach the load. Operator certification usually follows.
