Crane and Rigging Exam Prep for Geneva County
Geneva County sits on the Florida line in the lower Wiregrass, where the Choctawhatchee and Pea rivers come together at the county seat. Most lifting work here is tied to farming, food processing and small manufacturing rather than towers or big civil jobs: a peanut sheller in Samson, a newer glove factory in Hartford, utility and bridge crews keeping rural roads open. Crews from Slocomb, Samson, Hartford and Geneva can use our self-paced course to get ready for the written portion of a national crane certification without giving up a workday, then line up the hands-on practical through the certifying body.
Where cranes and boom trucks earn their keep here
Agriculture still sets the pace. Olam’s peanut shelling operation in Samson ranks among the county’s top employers, and plants like it lean on maintenance crews to swap out conveyors, dryers, bins and motors during the short window between harvests. Much of that work is done with a boom truck or a small hydraulic crane brought in by a contractor, which is exactly the equipment the service truck crane and mobile crane programs cover.
In 2022 ISA Alabama Corp. picked the Geneva County Industrial Park in Hartford for a glove manufacturing plant expected to bring about 80 jobs. New production floors mean steel erection, rooftop units and machinery setting, and they keep a rigging crew busy after opening day as lines are added or moved.
Two rivers, sandy ground and Gulf weather
The town of Geneva was built where the Pea River empties into the Choctawhatchee, and high water on both has shaped the place for generations. For anyone setting outriggers near a riverbank, a culvert or a bridge approach, saturated soil is the real hazard. The written exams spend real time on ground bearing, mat and cribbing choices, and how a load chart assumes firm, level support; local experience makes those questions easier to reason through.
Summers bring heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms that build fast, and tropical systems coming off the Gulf can push strong wind well inland. Knowing how wind affects a suspended load and when a lift should stop is part of both operator and signal person testing.
What federal rules actually require in Alabama
Nobody in Montgomery hands out a crane card, and neither does the county courthouse in Geneva. On a private job site the referee is federal OSHA. Under 1926.1427 a peanut plant contractor or a Hartford steel crew needs its operators certified through an accredited program and then signed off by the company on the actual machine. The person talking the operator through a blind pick is held to 1926.1428, and whoever slings a load while workers stand under it has to be a qualified rigger, the duty spelled out in 1926.1404(r) and 1926.1425(c).
Our Alabama certification guide explains each of those pieces in more detail, including where general-industry cranes inside plants fit.
Fitting study around harvest and shift work
Lessons open on a phone, tablet or laptop, so a farmhand or plant mechanic can chip away at practice questions on a lunch break or after a late shift, and the course remembers where you stopped. Once your scores settle, book the written exam with NCCCO: from a quiet room at home over a webcam, at a computer testing center, or at a scheduled test event. The hands-on practical always happens in person on a crane, and many Geneva County candidates line that trip up with the bigger Dothan market thirty-odd minutes north.
- Service truck crane operator: mechanics running a crane-equipped body at the shelling plant or a farm shop
- Mobile crane operator: hydraulic and rental cranes on Hartford and Samson projects
- Rigger Level 1: whoever picks the sling and hooks the load
- Signal person: ground hands guiding a pick the operator cannot see
Questions people ask
I only run a knuckle boom on a delivery truck. Do I still need to certify?
It depends on the task. Delivering materials to a construction site and placing them can fall under Subpart CC, and some articulating crane work is exempt only in narrow cases. Ask your employer how they classify your work, and look at the articulating crane course if certification is required.
Does a county or city government crew need the same certification?
Federal OSHA does not cover state and local public employees in Alabama, and the state has no OSHA-approved plan for them. Many public agencies still require national certification as policy, so check with your department.
My card is good for how long, and what does renewal take?
Five years from the date NCCCO certifies you. Inside the last twelve months before it expires you take the recertification written exam; if you can document 1,000 hours of crane-related work during the five years, the practical is waived.
