Etowah County seat · On the Coosa River
Gadsden Lifting Work Is Picking Up. Get Certified for It.
Gadsden spent decades as one of Alabama’s heaviest industrial towns, with Gulf States Steel, later Republic Steel, and a Goodyear tire plant that opened in 1929 and was the county’s biggest employer at the turn of this century. The steel mill and the tire plant are both gone, but the cranes are coming back for different reasons: a riverfront redevelopment program, a long-delayed interstate extension and the reuse of huge factory buildings. Our online course prepares operators, riggers and signal persons in the Gadsden area for the written exams of accredited crane certifications, on their own schedule.
Projects worth watching
RISE. In 2025 the city laid out a roughly $100 million bond-financed program to follow its earlier GROW Gadsden plan. Its centerpiece is an athletic complex on the Coosa with an aquatics center, courts, ballfields and a walking track, replacing the West Meighan Sports Complex. Construction was expected to begin in early 2026, with operations in 2028 or 2029.
Coosa Harbor. The city approved a site preparation agreement for a private waterfront development on city-owned land that had been vacant for more than 20 years, with groundbreaking expected in 2026 and a buildout of two to three years.
I-759 East Gadsden Connector. I-759 has ended at the east bank of the Coosa since 1986. ALDOT committed $65 million under Rebuild Alabama to extend it as a six-lane road from the end of the Coosa River Bridge to the US 431 and US 278 intersection. Highway work like that means girder sets, drainage structures and retaining walls next to live traffic.
Inside old factories
The 2.9 million-square-foot Goodyear building was leased in 2025 to a renewable energy company. Converting a plant that size usually means tearing out old process equipment and bringing in new lines, which is rigging-heavy work: machinery moves, rooftop units, structural changes and overhead crane repairs. Picks inside a building also bring low headroom, floor load limits and limited swing room.
This is where a Rigger Level II certification earns its keep. Knowing how to estimate weight and center of gravity on odd-shaped machinery, choose hitches and hardware, and plan a multi-step move is exactly what plant reuse calls for.
Riverfront ground and Northeast Alabama weather
Building along the Coosa means dealing with riverbank soils, fill and a water table close to the surface. Crane mats and a real ground assessment beat guesswork. Northeast Alabama sees strong spring storms and tornado watches, and summer afternoons can turn from hazy heat to lightning in an hour. Build weather calls and wind checks into the lift plan, and know the gust limits in your crane’s manual.
Certification basics for Etowah County
No state or city crane license exists in Alabama. Federal OSHA enforces Subpart CC on construction work, which means accredited operator certification plus an employer evaluation (1926.1427), a qualified signal person when the operator can’t see the load, and qualified riggers. NCCCO certifications last five years. More in the Alabama requirements guide.
Recertifying is simpler than the first time. Pass a written recertification exam within the five-year window, and if you’ve logged 1,000 hours of crane-related work in that period, the recertification practical can be waived. Our recertification course is built for operators coming up on that deadline.
Questions people ask
How far is the nearest big testing area?
The Birmingham metro is roughly an hour southwest on I-59. Written exams can also be taken by online proctored testing. Practical exams need a hands-on test site you schedule through the certifying body.
Which course helps with highway bridge work on the connector?
Start with mobile crane operator, and add signal person if you’ll be directing picks near traffic.
Is the training live or recorded classes?
Neither. It’s self-paced online study with practice questions, open at any hour on any device.
Can our shop enroll several riggers at once?
Yes. Send the details through the enrollment form and an advisor will reply about crew enrollment.
Is the Goodyear building reuse going to need crane operators?
Large plant conversions generally involve equipment removal and installation, which brings in riggers and crane crews. Hiring is up to the companies involved, so watch for contractor postings rather than counting on a set number of jobs.
