Exam Prep for Madison Crane and Rigging Crews

Madison grew up as a bedroom city next to Huntsville, and much of its crane work still looks like that: retail pads, apartments, schools, utility lines and road jobs rather than giant factories. The biggest recent example is Town Madison, a mixed-use district of more than 500 acres built around Toyota Field, where the Rocket City Trash Pandas play. The developer said in 2025 that it was only about 60% complete, so there is more building ahead. This online course helps Madison operators, riggers and signal persons get ready for accredited certification exams on their own time.

Bridge ramps, flyovers and live traffic

The westbound I-565 interchange at Town Madison Boulevard opened in March 2025 with new on and off ramps and two flyover bridges. The city put the cost at about $37 million. Interstate work like that means setting girders over traffic, night lifts with lane closures and tight staging on the shoulder. Those jobs call for an operator who reads the load chart carefully at long radius, a rigger who understands girder picking points and a signal person who can keep radio traffic clean when the operator can’t see the landing.

ALDOT and its contractors expect the same federal credentials as any private project. Under 29 CFR 1926.1427 the operator must be certified by an accredited body and evaluated by the employer, and under 1926.1428 whoever gives signals must be qualified.

Smaller machines carry most Madison jobs

For every large crawler on a flyover, there are dozens of picks done with boom trucks, service truck cranes and knuckle booms. Roof trusses on a new subdivision, HVAC units on a strip center, transformers for a utility, storefront glass for a restaurant at Town Madison: that is the daily work around here. Many of those operators never thought of themselves as crane operators, yet federal rules can still apply depending on the machine and the task.

If that sounds like your crew, look at articulating crane and service truck crane prep alongside the standard mobile crane course.

Clay, rain and summer storms

Madison’s soils are mostly red clay that bakes hard in August and turns slick after a soaking rain. Pads built for a single-story retail job may not be built for a 60-ton crane on outriggers. Ask about compaction and use cribbing or mats big enough to spread the load.

Summer afternoons bring pop-up thunderstorms with lightning and sudden gusts. Spring is tornado season across the Tennessee Valley. A good habit is to agree on a stop-work point for wind and lightning in the pre-lift meeting, so no one has to argue about it with a load in the air.

Studying without losing a workday

The written exams can be taken through Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a test event. The practical exam is separate and always hands-on. Start with the enrollment form and an advisor will reply.

  • Self-paced lessons on phone, tablet or laptop.
  • Practice questions written in the style of the certification exams.
  • Available 24/7, so it fits around early starts and weekend shifts.
  • Group enrollment for contractors who want the whole crew ready together.

Questions people ask

Is Madison’s crane market different from Huntsville’s?

The rules are identical, but the work leans toward commercial, residential, utility and road projects instead of big federal and factory campuses. See the Huntsville page for that side of the county.

Do boom truck operators need certification?

Often, yes. Boom trucks used in construction generally fall under Subpart CC. Fixed-cab telescopic boom trucks are covered by NCCCO's TSS specialty (the separate BTF exam was retired in 2021), and smaller service-body cranes by the service truck crane (STC) category.

Will online study get me certified by itself?

No. It prepares you for the written exams. You still need to pass the written test and a hands-on practical through the certifying body.

Does the city issue its own crane permit or license?

There is no Madison or Alabama crane operator license. Job sites may still need city permits for street closures or work in the right-of-way, which is a separate matter.
