Lowndes County Operators: Study for Your Crane Card Online

Lowndes County is mostly farmland and pine, but Interstate 65 runs straight through it and Hyundai's assembly plant sits just across the line in Montgomery. That combination has drawn automotive suppliers to industrial parks along the interstate, and it keeps nearby contractors busy with steel buildings, conveyor installs and equipment moves. If you live around Hayneville, Fort Deposit or White Hall and want a nationally recognized crane or rigging certification, you can do all the book study from home and save the trip for exam day.

Plants feeding the Hyundai line

The Lowndes County Industrial Park, just off I-65, is home to Daehan Solutions Alabama, which makes interior sound-insulation parts and employs close to 300 people. Down the interstate, the Fort Deposit Industrial Park houses Sejong Alabama, a muffler and exhaust-system maker that ships much of its output to Hyundai's Montgomery plant. Chowel Weldparts, which supplies welding equipment and consumables to Hyundai, Kia and tier-one vendors, is another automotive name in the county.

These plants use robotic welding cells, presses and conveyor systems that get rearranged whenever a model changes. That work brings in rigging crews, forklifts with jib attachments, boom trucks and the occasional mobile crane, and every pick still needs someone qualified to rig it and someone qualified to signal it.

Room for more industry

The county markets a 735-acre AdvantageSite at I-65 and Tyson Road beside the CSX main line, plus the 900-acre Alabama River Partners tract with both rail and river frontage. If either site lands a large tenant, the build would mean months of steel erection and heavy equipment setting, which is exactly the kind of job where general contractors ask for certified operators first.

For now, much of the local crane work happens on smaller jobs: setting trusses for rural churches and shops, swapping transformers, placing precast culverts on county roads and lifting grain-handling equipment on farms.

Certification versus licensing in Alabama

Alabama doesn't license crane operators, and that sometimes leads people to think no credential is needed. In fact, the federal construction standard applies statewide. 29 CFR 1926.1427 says an operator must be certified by an accredited testing organization and evaluated by the employer, 1926.1428 sets the bar for signal persons, and 1926.1404 and 1926.1425 require qualified riggers for assembly, disassembly and hooking tasks.

Because Alabama has no state plan, federal OSHA enforces these rules for private employers through its Birmingham and Mobile area offices. Note that county and town road crews are public employees, and Alabama has no OSHA-approved plan covering them, so their requirements come from their own employer's policy.

Southern weather on an open site

Flat fields give wind a long run. Spring storm lines out of Mississippi can bring sudden gusts and tornado warnings, and summer heat and humidity wear on crews by early afternoon. Clay soils turn soft after heavy rain, so outrigger mats and a ground check are part of every setup.

Our online prep is self-paced and runs on any phone, tablet or laptop. When you're ready, take the NCCCO written exam through Online Proctored Testing, at a computer test center or at a test event. The practical test is always hands-on at an accredited site.

Questions people ask

I've never run a crane. Where should I start?

Many people begin with Rigger Level 1 or Signal Person. Both are useful on supplier-plant jobs and build the knowledge an operator exam assumes.

Do I need a separate card for a service truck crane?

Service truck cranes have their own restricted NCCCO category (STC). Our Service Truck Crane Operator prep covers it.

How do I get started?

Fill out the enrollment form. An enrollment advisor will reply and can set up crew enrollment if your company is sending several people.

Is Hyundai's assembly plant in Lowndes County?

No. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama is in Montgomery, just north of the county line. Lowndes plants such as Daehan Solutions and Sejong Alabama supply it, and crews here often work jobs on both sides of the line. Certification earned for one job travels with you to the next, since NCCCO credentials are national and good for five years.
