Cullman County Operators: Prepare for Your Crane Certification Online

Halfway between Birmingham and Huntsville on Interstate 65, Cullman County has turned a farming and poultry base into one of north Alabama’s busier manufacturing centers. Its industrial parks hold automotive stamping, plastic molding, plumbing products and heavy-truck components, and new buildings and expansions keep coming. That steady growth means press installs, steel erection, equipment moves and maintenance picks across the county, from the plants around Cullman out to the smaller towns along the interstate. Our online exam prep is self-paced, so you can get ready for a written certification exam on your own schedule.

What the industrial parks are building

Topre America, an automotive stamping operation, is the county’s largest manufacturing employer and has announced expansions in recent years. Stamping plants depend on large presses and dies, and every press line that goes in or comes out for rebuild is a major rigging job. REHAU, a plastic injection molder on Industrial Drive SW, marked 25 years in Cullman in 2021 with plans for 125 jobs and $50 million in investment tied to electric-vehicle parts.

Other names in the mix include Yutaka Technologies and Royal Technologies on the auto side, Webb Wheel Products on Industrial Drive, and Reliance Worldwide, which spent about $50 million to join two buildings in Industrial Park II. Industrial Park III adds Topre, NAFCO and Advanced Heat Treat. Each project like these brings tilt-up walls, steel, rooftop equipment and machinery that a crane has to set.

The federal rulebook, applied in Cullman

Nothing in Alabama law creates a crane license, and Cullman issues none either. Construction lifting follows 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC. Section 1926.1427 makes operators hold certification from an accredited testing organization and adds an employer evaluation; 1926.1428 calls for a qualified signal person when the operator can’t see the load or landing zone; and 1926.1404 and 1926.1425 require qualified riggers for assembly work and hooking loads. Production overhead cranes inside a finished plant fall under 1910.179.

Federal OSHA enforces these rules for private employers throughout Alabama from area offices in Birmingham and Mobile. Employers that want a safety review without enforcement can ask UA SafeState, the University of Alabama’s free and confidential on-site consultation program, which does not write citations. Our requirements page walks through the details.

Weather and terrain on north Alabama job sites

Cullman sits on a plateau with rolling hills that break toward the lakes and creeks to the west. Spring is tornado season across north Alabama, summer afternoons build thunderstorms with lightning and gusts, and the red clay that covers much of the region turns soft after rain. Crane crews here learn to check forecasts against wind limits, keep mats and cribbing ready for wet ground and set outriggers on graded pads rather than fresh fill. Expect the written exams to test exactly these judgment calls.

Getting to exams

Written exams can be taken by Online Proctored Testing, at computer test centers or at test events. The hands-on practical is always given at a practical test site, and online study does not replace it. From the county seat, both the Birmingham and Huntsville metros are within about an hour on I-65, which widens the options for practical testing. Employers can enroll a whole crew, and questions go to an enrollment advisor through the form.

Questions people ask

Which certification fits a press-line installation crew?

Riggers handling dies and press components usually start with Rigger Level 1 and move to Level 2 if they plan the lifts. The operator of any mobile crane brought in for the job needs certification under 1926.1427.

Is there a Cullman city permit for crane operators?

No. Neither the city nor the state issues an operator license. Certification from an accredited body, plus your employer’s evaluation, is what federal rules require.

I already hold a card that expires next year. What should I study?

Certifications last five years. You will take a written recertification exam, and 1,000 hours of crane-related experience in the period can waive the practical. Start with Mobile Crane Recertification.
