Crane Certification Study for Bay Minette and North Baldwin
Bay Minette is the Baldwin County seat, and its job market has little in common with the beach towns to the south. On the South Alabama Megasite, a certified tract of roughly 3,000 acres off I-65, Novelis has spent four years building one of the largest industrial projects in state history, and new contractors keep setting up in the Bay Minette Industrial Park. Our course lets you study for an accredited crane, rigging or signal person written exam from home, at whatever hour your shift ends.
Novelis and the megasite
Novelis broke ground on its aluminum rolling and recycling plant in October 2022. The price was first announced at $2.5 billion, rose to about $4.1 billion in 2024 and later to roughly $5 billion, according to the company. Fluor has led construction, Novelis began commissioning the cold mill in March 2026, and the company expects the plant to commission during the second half of 2026. At full capacity it is designed to turn out 600,000 metric tons of finished aluminum a year, largely beverage can sheet, and to employ up to 1,000 people.
Building a rolling mill takes long stretches of structural steel erection, heavy equipment setting and miles of process piping, so the site has seen large crawlers working beside fleets of hydraulic and carry-deck cranes. Once the mill is running, the work shifts to overhead cranes moving coils and rolls, plus mobile cranes brought in for maintenance outages.
Smaller projects follow big ones. In August 2026, RTF Project Services announced a $2.2 million operational facility on a planned 20-acre site in the Bay Minette Industrial Park, with about 140 jobs expected. Industrial owners and general contractors on sites like these want proof of accredited operator certification and documented rigger and signal person qualification before anyone joins a lift team.
Pick the card that matches your role
Holding more than one card is common on big sites. An operator who can also rig and signal is easier to schedule, and a rigger who later moves into the seat already understands how loads behave. Many people start with the certification for the job they do now and add a second one within a year.
- Operating a hydraulic or crawler crane: start with Mobile Crane Operator.
- Hooking up and directing loads: Rigger Level II covers the load calculations industrial jobs expect.
- Talking a crane through blind picks: Signal Person.
- Maintenance techs with truck cranes: Service Truck Crane Operator.
Delta ground and inland storms
West of town the land drops toward the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, a wide maze of rivers, swamp and bottomland forest. Sites near low ground hold water after heavy rain, and clay soils across north Baldwin can turn from firm to slick in a single storm. Large cranes on industrial sites sit on engineered pads for a reason.
Sitting inland doesn't take Bay Minette out of hurricane country. Tropical systems bring sustained wind and days of rain well north of the coast, and spring storm lines can spin up tornadoes. Our course covers wind limits, ground bearing pressure and securing equipment ahead of weather, all topics that show up on written exams.
Rules contractors in north Baldwin follow
Alabama has no state crane operator license, and Bay Minette has no local one. Federal OSHA covers private employers here and enforces 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC on construction sites: accredited certification and an employer evaluation for operators under 1926.1427, plus qualified riggers and signal persons. Once the Novelis mill is producing, its permanent overhead cranes fall under general industry rule 1910.179. Employers who want a no-citation safety review can ask UA SafeState. Details are in our Alabama requirements guide.
Questions people ask
Will online study get me hired on an industrial project?
We can't promise a job. What the course does is prepare you for the written exams of accredited certifications that many industrial contractors ask for.
Is a mobile crane card enough to run an overhead crane in a plant?
Not necessarily. Overhead and gantry cranes fall under general industry rules, and plants usually train and evaluate operators on their own equipment.
How long do I have to finish the course?
The course is self-paced. Work through it as quickly or slowly as your schedule allows and come back to sections before your exam.
Can a contractor sign up a whole crew from Bay Minette?
Yes. Use the enrollment form to ask about crew enrollment.
Does the course cover lattice boom crawler cranes?
The mobile crane course covers the lattice boom (LAT) specialty along with telescopic swing-cab and fixed-cab cranes. Choose the specialty that matches the machine you will test on.
